The types of wine
grapes, Riesling, Muller-Thurgau, Scheurebe, Blauer Spatburgunder, Blauer Portugieser Our vineyards in Oberwesel on the middle Rhine river are planted with the following types of wine grapes: 75% Riesling, 10% Spatburgunder, as well as Muller-Thurgau, Scheurebe and Portugieser.
Riesling The Riesling is the most highly esteemed of all grapes. Distinguishing
characteristics of the Riesling are its thoroughbred, elegance and an unequable bouquet
reminiscent of peach. This typical race, finesse and fruitiness form the characteristics
which have made this grape so famous.
This type of grape has had to struggle for a number of years to gain its recognition in Germany. The Muller-Thurgau grape, first cultivated by Prof. Dr. H. Müller, a Swiss from the Thurgau region, in 1882, is a hybrid between a Riesling as mother and a Silvaner as father, and hence is also known as Rivaner. Scheurebe Georg Scheu cultivated this grape in 1916 from a Silvaner (mother) and a Riesling (father). Matured wines have a spirited acidity of a typical note a little like black currant. Blauer Spatburgunder Similar to the status of the Riesling among the white wines, the Spatburgunder reaches the top quality mark among the red wines. This wine is richer, velvety and with an aroma somewhat like bitter-almonds. The Burgunder is among the oldest cultural heritages of mankind, originating probably in the Nile river valley and finding its way to Europe through the wine culture of the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. Blauer Portugieser Rumor has it, that in 1772 the Portgugieser was brought from Oporto, Portugal to Voslau, Austria by Baron von Fries. From there it continued its triumphant progress through the northern wine regions of Europe. These wines are light red, with a marked freshness through a fine acidity. Vineyard estate, Winery Stahl |
